How to pronounce déjà-vu the French way
Posted: 30 September 2011 Filed under: French used in Writing | Tags: Déjà vu, French expressions 1 CommentThis Lifehacker post explains what is déjà-vu. Do you know how to properly prononce déjà vu the French way? After all, it’s an expression coined by a French psychiatrist.
Déjà vu does not rhyme with voulez-vous – like in the famous « Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir » (I have to make a blog entry about that classic French sentence…).
It’s a French “u“, like in salut. (It’s a silent t, of course).
You can listen to it here: Déjà-vu pronounced properly (thanks Wikipedia).
It’s also prononced quite well in the song Déjà-vu by Jay Jay Johanson. I suspect Jay Jay is a francophile: the song Jay Jay Johanson is a duet with Autour de Lucie singer Valérie Leulliot.

“Déjà-vu all over again” is also difficult to beat;
though I believe Gainsbourg wrote “flashback au temps passé”(sp?)
Déjà-vous? is what St-Peter says at the Pearly gates.
